Milton Keynes City Council plans a 20mph zone covering 26 roads in Browns Wood after residents asked for one. Comments and objections close on 5 November.
Every residential road in Browns Wood would get a 20mph speed limit under plans from Milton Keynes City Council. Residents have until 5 November to comment or object.
The council served notice of the order (reference TRO-488) on 15 October. Its consultation page carries the proposed order, the notice and a statement of reasons.
Why the council wants it
The idea came from residents. The council’s statement of reasons says the proposal “has been brought forward following representations and a request from residents of Browns Wood”, who raised road safety as a concern.
The council’s own traffic surveys found speeds on the estate “are already generally low”. It puts that down to the layout of the streets and their tight junctions. The new limit would therefore formalise what already happens, the council says, rather than force drivers to slow down sharply.
The statement gives these reasons among others:
- safer streets for people walking and cycling, and for children
- less risk of collisions, and less harm when they happen
- one consistent limit, joining up with the existing 20mph zone in neighbouring Old Farm Park
- the estate already has vertical traffic calming features, which the council says support a 20mph limit
The zone would be marked with 20mph entry signs and repeater signs.
The 26 roads
The proposed order covers each of these roads for its entire length. Many are named after composers.
| Bantock Close | Gabriel Close | Mozart Close |
| Bernstein Close | Gershwin Court | Rubbra Close |
| Berwald Close | Holst Crescent | Schumann Close |
| Bliss Court | Ireland Close | Strauss Grove |
| Bowen Close | Mahler Close | Sullivan Crescent |
| Copeland Close | Mendelssohn Grove | Tallis Lane |
| Delius Close | Moeran Close | Tippett Close |

The order adds Browns Wood as zone “SZ30” to the council’s existing 2021 order for 20mph zones across Milton Keynes.
What it means for you
If you live in Browns Wood or drive through it, you can support or object to the plan. Objections must give your reasons. To respond:
- Write to the Traffic Regulation Order Team by email at TROteam@milton-keynes.gov.uk, or by post to Milton Keynes City Council, Civic Offices, 1 Saxon Gate East, Central Milton Keynes, MK9 3EJ.
- Quote the reference TRO-488.
- Make sure it arrives by Thursday 5 November 2026.
The council says it will consider every representation before it makes the order. The proposed order leaves the start date blank, so no date has been set for the signs to go up.
